Commuter Spotlight – September, 2024

Welcome to COMMUTEwell’s "Commuter Spotlight" series, where we shine a light on the dedicated individuals who choose sustainable modes of transportation to commute to work. City of Los Angeles employees travel to work in various ways. Some employees bike, walk, scoot, carpool, vanpool, take public transportation, and drive alone. This series is intended to share the stories of commuters, such as you, who demonstrate it's possible to get to work without driving alone!

This month we are featuring Tim Fremaux, who is sharing their story of their bike commute to work.

1. How often are you commuting by bike?

Twice a week, when I report to the office (I telecommute on other days)

2. What is the best part of your commute?

Whizzing along the LA River Bike Path, passing all the cars stuck in traffic on the 5 Freeway.

3. Who/what inspired you to start commuting by bike?

I've been cycling my whole life; and the fact that I can use the LA River Bike Path for most of the trip makes biking to work really attractive (and the fact that I can get to work in under an hour is competitive with taking Metrolink or driving).

4. What benefits do you find in biking to work or other destinations?

Free and easy parking! Fresh air and having face-to-face contact with people on the street. Saving money. Making transportation fun!

5. Do you have any tips or advice for someone considering trying a biking commute?

Find a way to ease into it, and make it both fun and efficient. Maybe that means biking one day a week. Or maybe it means just biking to the bus or train station. There's lots of different ways to integrate it into your commute. And plan a route that is comfortable! Take advantage of local streets and those bigger streets that have bike lanes.

6. Do you have any memorable moments or stories from your bike commute that you’d like to share?

Not a specific moment, but most days, I'm reminded that most people on the road are courteous and it's nice to get that reaffirmation when riding (those that aren't are the exception rather than the rule).

Have a sustainable commute story you would like to share? We’re collecting stories about commuters who carpool, vanpool, bike, walk, scoot or take transit on the typical workday.
