Go Green with COMMUTEwell this April

April is Earth Month! In observation, COMMUTEwell encourages you to learn about how your transportation choices affect us and our environment. A typical car produces 4.6 metric tons of CO2 per year1; there are over eight million vehicles2 in Los Angeles, which accounts for about 20% of all emitted greenhouse gases (GHG) in the region3. Not only can GHG negatively impact our environment by trapping heat, decreasing air quality, and by causing extreme weather patterns, it can impact human health by increasing risk of respiratory diseases4.
Practicing sustainable transportation is easy in Los Angeles! Sustainable transportation is any mode that does not use single occupancy driving, such as walking, biking, skating, scooting, carpooling, vanpooling, or using public transit.
Active (People-Powered) Transportation
Walking, biking, scooting, or skating is a breeze in Los Angeles, thanks to the sunny weather, and you can even earn money doing it with COMMUTEwell! Using active transportation can decrease GHG emission by about six to fourteen million tons per year5. You can receive $5 per day (up to $100 per month) to commute to work by walking or biking, and you can check to see if your worksite has showers or lockers on-site. If you don’t have a bike but would like to ride one, you can rent with Metro Bikeshare. You can learn more about walking or biking to work here on our website.
Public Transit
LADOT, LA Metro, and Metrolink are the main transit agencies for the City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles County. Compared to single occupancy driving, using transit reduces GHG emissions by 45% and reduces 37 million tons of CO2 annually6. COMMUTEwell can provide subsidies for employees that use transit to commute to work with a Transit Spending Account (TSA) or a Transit Subsidy Reimbursement (TSR).
Carpooling and Vanpooling
The average car emits about 400 grams of CO2 per mile7. By sharing your ride, you can reduce the number of vehicles on the road and decrease GHG emissions emitted! Even two people in a car can reduce 2,000 pounds of GHGs per year8. You can learn more about carpooling to work here and vanpooling to work here.
We encourage you to try a sustainable transportation method this Earth Month to get to one of these fun events!
